Improving Our
Serve II: with our HEART
Rev. Edwin Kong Executive Director
In our previous issue, I presented the first part of this series, "Improving our serve - with our Head". This second part - " serving with our Heart" - will conclude the series.
Serving with our heart means:
1. Serving with Conviction
Conviction is the driving force behind all ministries. It comes from vision and leads to commitment, dedication and sacrifice. Martin Luther King's "I have a dream!" speech was not only spoken with conviction, but it also solidified his commitment to the cause and he ultimately sacrificed his life for it. Hudson Taylor gave his all to China because of his conviction.
Conviction brings courage against all odds. It does not compromise; rather, it gives strength when we are weak, and keeps us going when we are tempted to quit.
It was a conviction to reach the lost that led me to dedicate my life to the ministry. It was our conviction "To bring the Church to the people" that led to the beginning of CCM Centre and Small Town mission.
2. Serving with Passion
With conviction comes passion. Like chopsticks they function side by side. Show me a person with conviction, and I will show you a passionate individual. Often, passion expresses itself in strong emotion and it is contagious. Those in the company of passionate people cannot help but be influenced. Jesus was moved with compassion when he saw the crowds scattered like sheep without a shepherd (Matthew 9:36). At Lazarus' tomb, he was deeply moved and troubled to the point of tears (John 11:33-35).
When we preach with passion, hearts are touched. When we sing with passion, joy and tears flow. When we pray with passion, God's hand moves. It is the people who serve with passion who make a mark in our lives. Let us re-introduce passion into our serve.
It is important to serve with our HEAD, but even more important to serve with our HEART.
